     5 Dot Clinic

Flea Flicker made an excellent post about the 5 Dot Stillwater   Clinic put on by Doug Ouellette. If you have not read it look for it under general fly fishing and do your self a favor and read it.

From my point of view the

The Five Dot Stillwater clinic last Saturday and Sunday with Doug was one of the best fishing / learning experiences for me because it affirmed many things I already knew and use but helped me think about them in a new way. It also added new things and got me to think outside the box. The clinic got me to reflect on the way I handle fish, tie knots, set up my leaders, what I do to set my self up to fish the the wind, to subtle changes in my   retrieve that move me beyond hand twist retrieve. Doug used practical stillwater tactics that add up tomake a difference. I put some of these strategies to the test on the last day Sunday and managed to catch a large number of quality fish, I had the retrieve dialed and I could feel the fish   lick the fly.

Manzanita
So the clinic ended on Sunday. My wife and I had plans to spend the week at   Manzanita Lake. I try to spend at least a few days up at Manzanita each year   because no matter how the catching goes the fishing is great. When I got   there people from a bay area club were fishing the lake and they told me the   fishing was really slow. There were also guys that fish the lake all the time   from Redding they confirmed the slow report. I fished Monday night and it   was slow. I tried some of my new tactics and I was searching for a pattern. I   managed 1 nice fish by the end of the evening. I got him because he showed   himself, I guessed right on his path and he took the fly. I got lucky. The   hatches were minimal mostly black caddis. People were right it was slow. Then   things changed for me because I remembered a couple of things Doug had mentioned.   I noticed just 3 adult blue damsels. I thought ok I will try a dark olive   bead head damsel that I tie. I fished it in 15 feet of water with heavy weed   growth no luck. I tried 10 feet of water I put to work a new retrieve Doug   had shown me. I caught a fish. I paid attention to the wind and made the   adjustments I caught another fish, the confidence factor was increasing. I   got into the zone and everything I was shooting was going in, the hoop got   big. I ended the evening with 9 fish 5 larger ones. Other anglers just a   couple of fish for the evening. So I had to get up early the next morning to   see if this pattern continued. The first thing I saw was one of the early   morning bay area club fishing warriors on the water. He asked me how I did. I   told what how I did and what I thought. He fished the fly and got into a 16   incher. I fished from 6:30 am to 8:30am and got into 9 fish 4 of them bigger   fish. Other angles just a couple of fish if any. Now I wanted to see what   would happen to the evening bite I managed just 2 small fish, the bite had   changed.
Now I had another puzzle to solve. So the lesson to me was just because the   bite is slow pay attention to details and they can add up and create an   advantage. I would recommend Doug’s clinic to anyone who is   interested in raising their their stillwater game. Oh by the way Doug has one   spool of just fluro carbon leader no fly line he fishes it by casting it 30   feet with a couple of midges.I encouraged Doug On Saturday afternoon to fish   next to me with his spool of flurocarbon leader and no fly line.If I got ten   fish he landed 30. He can also show you how to build and cast 18 to 30 foot   leaders with a fly line and fish effectively with no indicators.

Finally
I want to thank Kevin Doran who helped me trick out my Tacoma so I can load   and unload my 125lb metal head pram

Doug,
I want to thank you for the June 1 through 3, 2012 Dot 5 Stillwater Clinic. The information given, hands on instruction and fishing surpassed all my expectations.  While I have been fly fishing moving water for many years, I am just  beginning to fly fish still water and was not very confident about the process.  While fly fishing moving and still water may use some of the same equipment, flies and technics, at your clinic I learned that there are some very major differences and how to make those adjustments.  I am now much more confident to move forward fly fishing still waters.
Another great thing about the clinic is that there were attendees.  What a great group of fishermen who encouraged each other no matter what the level of experience.
And, the fishing was absolutely fantastic!!!
I hope to attend this clinic next year and will be recommending it to anyone in beginning still water fly fishing or just improving their skills.
Thanks again!!!

Testimonial;  I am self-taught and not what anyone would consider an expert in fly fishing.  I came to this clinic with the anticipation that I would learn and perfect fishing techniques and acquire new skills.  I was not disappointed.  Doug did a fantastic job working both with the group and individually, no matter what the level of the fisherman, to be sure each person was getting what they needed.  I am extremely satisfied and would recommend this clinic highly.  Five Dot is a special place and the fishing was off the charts! Thank you, Jeff B.

TRUCKEE RIVER  JUNE 2012

Hi Doug,

Now that I’m back home and settled in I wanted to send you a note thanking you for a first class day on the Little Truckee last Saturday.  The knowledge I gained by highstick nymphing under your guidance not only paid off handsomely with the excellent rainbows we bought to net, but with the added confidence I gained through your instruction on reading the water and presenting the flies I’m sure I’ll be killing ‘em back here on the east coast as well.  I’ll keep you informed on my adventures in the Catskills and on the Delaware this year.  Above all that, I felt like I was fishing with an old friend, not a guide or stranger I just met hours earlier.  That added tremendously to the experience and I want to thank you for that most of all.  Please expect to hear from me again when I’m back in the neighborhood.  Thanks once again and I look forward to doing it again.

Thanks, Mike M.

TRUCKEE RIVER  March 17, 2013

Doug,

Had an incredible day with you today. See my post for your website below. Looking forward to your pics.

Thanks again,

Larry

Fished with guide Doug Ouellette today, St Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2013 on the Nevada side of the Truckee River. Although I’ve fished for over 60 years I’m fairly new to fly-fishing. I’ve tried my luck on my own a few times on the California side of the Truckee. Nada, zip, nothing but frustration and a lot of nymphs and flies left on the bottom of the river. Today? a whole new ballgame. Wow! Doug, my instructive shadow, had my back (literally) the whole time–more on that later. Second cast, BAM, a nice 20-inch rainbow, bright and pink. I’m thinking, beginners luck, but no the day just kept getting better. Missed several strikes because I was asleep at the wheel. By no means Doug’s fault, because he seemed to know when the fish were going to hit. He showed me how to mend, keeping the indicator straight up and down with a nice natural drift. When I did have a good drift going he whisper, “Get ready.” Sure enough no sooner than he gives me the prompt, down goes the indicator. On one big fish I got so excited trying to hold on to the brute, that I leaned back, took a step to the rear, hit a rock, and I’m butt first in the Truckee, cold water running down my backside into my waders. Next thing I know I’m on my feet again thanks to Doug’s delft moves. The fish? Gone until the next lucky angler has his or her chance. He asks, “Want to wade ashore and dry off?” Are you kidding me? Adrenaline’s pumping hard, no way am I cold. I feel like I’m 15 years old. “Let hook some more of these brutes,” I reply. We brought five fish to the net, and had several other “long distance releases” of really nice rainbows. Fantastic half day of trout fishing. Thanks, Doug, I’ll be coming back.
