5-DOT Ranch is the largest working cattle ranch in the state of California. On the ranch there is a 400 acre private lake (Round Valley Reservoir) which is located between the town of Susanville and Eagle Lake.This reservoir is locally known as “5 DOT Res.” and has very limited access. It is full of powerful Triploid Rainbow Trout and is the perfect place for any level of flyfisher to hone their stillwater skills.
Doug Ouellette who runs the clinics has been fishing and teaching anglers advanced stillwater techniques for over 30 years. Doug is well known nationally for his expertise on stillwaters. He has fished many lakes and reservoirs across the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. He grew up learning his skills at Eagle Lake, Davis Lk. and Frenchman Res.
The clinics are a 2 1/2 day fishing event which will cover advanced stillwater techniques, including aquatic entomology, presenting food items, reading water, and fly selection. The clinics will also cover knot tying, leaders, and proper rigging. Doug will teach shoreline wading, float tube, pontoon boat, small pram, and large boat techniques including “Loch Style” fishing. These clinics offer plenty of “on the water” instruction as well as many hours of angling time to practice these techniques.
This year Doug will be accompanied by Ernie Gully. Ernie is a premiere guide at the famous California stillwater Crowley Lake. His years of knowledge and passion for stillwater fly fishing will be a tremendous asset to the “Outside the Box Clinics”.

Accommodations
Camping is included on the Ranch and is recommended. There is a nice group camping area set up for dinner Friday and Saturday along with the “Power Point ” presentation. Please note that this is a “rough” campsite with no running water. There are Sani-Huts.
For those who choose to stay at a hotel, the “Mariner’s Resort” is located just 15 minutes away in Stones Landing on the north shore of Eagle Lake. They have an outstanding restaurant along with very nice inexpensive rooms. Susanville which is 20 minutes away also has hotels available.

This clinic is designed to help anglers of all skill levels to learn more about fly fishing in stillwaters. While this clinic is focused on fishing for trout, much of the information may be used to catch a variety of fish species.
We will be covering many different tactics from the basics to advanced and a few “Outside the Box” techniques. The clinic allows the anglers to spend a great deal of time with “on the water instructional fishing” along with comprehensive “Chalk Talk” sessions. The course also features a complete Power Point Presentation. In this clinic we will concentrate on imitating the trout’s food items that are found in the lake by selecting the correct fly pattern and how to retrieve them for optimum results.
