Truckee River Fishing Report July 2015
The Truckee River is closed to fishing in the state of California due to the extreme low water flows caused by the severe drought.
The Nevada side is UNFISHABLE and should not be fished due to the extreme low water flows and the high water temperatures caused by the extensive drought.
* The best options for angling is the high elevation lakes and streams in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.
Truckee River Fishing Report May 7, 2015
The flows on the Truckee River are very low. Check the “Water Flows” on the drop down menu of this page for the current flows. The flows in the California canyon near Farad have been OK at around 300cfs but the Nevada flows have been up and down, mostly down. Use your own strict discretion when angling.
Truckee River Report for March 8, 2015
It’s been a while since the last report on the Truckee. The water flows are back and it is in great shape, this is a great time to get on the river. Baetis have been hatching in good numbers and the browns and rainbows are on them. The BWO’s are now in a size 16 and soon will be betting a bit smaller at an 18. We have had some pretty good dry fly action this last week and it should continue for a little while.
Pick your favorite stretch and have fun.
Truckee River Fishing Report for December 11,2014
The river is back! It’s been a long time coming! With the recent storms the water flows on the river have jumped up big time. Things are looking good so far for the 2015 season. Hopefully most of the fish in the river survived the low warm waters and the unscrupulous anglers that targeted them. As the river settles a bit I will be continuing to give reports.
The flows as of today are:
California : 294cfs @ Boca, 564 @ Farad
Nevada : 374@ Mogul, 485 @ Reno, 642 @ Vista
For hourly flow reports go to the “Water Flows” page on this website.
Truckee River Fishing Report for October 10, 2014
Nevada Side Truckee River
Again, with the water flows at around 30 cfs in Reno I believe it is unethical and unsportsmanlike to even attempt to fish the Nevada side of the Truckee River, regardless of the water temperature. The fish are stuck in the remaining pools and are defenseless. Any angler that that thinks this acceptable has absolutely NO scruples! To try to get a “hero” shot in these conditions is embarrassing to say the least! Leave the fish alone! Let them try to survive for next year. I have been watching these fish struggle just to breath, it is very sad. Any angler that disputes what I say on this matter has little or no respect for the river and the fish that live in it.
Truckee River Fishing Report for September 23, 2014
Water Flows: 90cfs Boca Bridge, 26cfs Reno
Nevada Side
With the water flows at a trickle (26cfs) in Nevada I believe it is unethical to even attempt to fish the Truckee River anywhere on the Nevada side. The fish are having a tremendous ordeal just trying to survive these harsh conditions.
California Side
The flows are around 90cfs near the Boca Bridge. The water temps were 58 degrees on 09/22/14. There is some limited fishable water, look for the sections that narrow down with pocket water.
IT’S TIME TO FISH STILLWATERS!
Truckee River Fishing Report for September 5, 2014
Water Flows: [email protected] Bridge, 142cfs@ Farad, [email protected], [email protected]
As you can see the water flows are very low. Along with the low flows and the warm days, the water temps have come up again. Last week things were OK but please be cautious this week, the last couple of days have been very warm. With that being said we have released many trophy fish from morning trips. We have been off the water no later than noon.
Flies: Stonedaddys, Peaches & Cream, G6’s, Sweet Peas, Buster Browns, Tuxedos.
To see some outstanding trophy pictures of last week’s trips go to http://www.calvadaflyfishing.com/?page_id=30 .
Truckee River Fishing Report for August 8, 2014
California Flows: 202 Boca Bridge, 234 Farad
Nevada Flows: 86@ Mogul, 143@ Reno
Due to the recent rain and cooler temperatures last week, the Truckee River fished very well. The flows came up 30 to 40 cfs and cooled to around 62 degrees. We had some very good trips , these pics are of Larry M. and Craig Williams. Craig is a veteran short line nymph fisherman from the Ted Fay days. It was a pleasure to fish with these guys. The fish were grabbing the “Peaches & Cream”. That being said the water flows are down again and caution should be taken while angling. Carry a thermometer, if it gets up to 66 degrees it is probably time to get off the water. Again, try to watch Donald Zimmerman’s “Hoot Owl” video for more information.
Truckee River Fishing Report July 26, 2014
California Flows: 459 @Boca Bridge, 494@ Farad
Nevada Flows: 300@ Mogul, [email protected]
As you can see from last week the flows are steady, however they are scheduled to be reduced July 29th. We got another week of good flows due to the rain and thunderstorms.
Because of the warm water temperatures putting additional stress on the fish, a group of my friends and guides are asking the angling community to participate in a voluntary “Hoot Owl” closure on the Truckee River. We are asking anglers to fish in the cooler mornings only and to refrain from fishing past noon. Please get the hooked fish in as quickly as possible for release. If you take a picture have the camera ready for a quick picture, keep the fish in the water as much as possible.
Donald Zimmerman produced a fantastic video on the “Hoot Owl” program that should be published soon.
Flies: Peaches & Cream, Bird’s Nests, G6’s, The Brick, Stonedaddys, Prince Nymphs.
Fishing Report July 20, 2014
California Flows : 217 Near Truckee, 459 @Boca Bridge, 504 @Farad
Nevada Flows : 291@ Mogul, [email protected], 208@ Vista
California Side: Due to heavy cloud bursts and runoff this past week the California side has been muddy and off colored. Some anglers that know how to approach this condition have been able to hook fish, however for most it has been tough. Darker patterns are usually best in these situations. The good old prince nymph with the contrast (white on peacock) can be good.
Nevada Side: The Nevada side is also getting muddy from the heavy rains. As with the Calif side, darker patterns have been best. This week was very good from the state line all the way through Sparks. A good number of big browns, rainbows, and the native whitefish were released. Today July 20th the river was off colored and produced some dandys! Short line nymphing has been a great technique.
Flies: Any black and peacock patterns in size 10 to 14, “The Brick” is a good choice
The flows will be reduced to 150cfs on July 29th. Fish Now- Have Fun!
IT’s raining now- WE NEED THE WATER!
Fishing Report July 14, 2014
California Flows : 213cfs @ near Truckee, 459cfs @ Boca Bridge, 494cfs @ Farad
Nevada Flows : 291cfs@ Mogul, 285cfs @ Reno, 171cfs Vista
The flows are still very good both in California and Nevada, however on the Nevada side east of Sparks, the water is very warm and it has an excess amount of vegetation.
This last week brought cloudy overcast days which made angling very good throughout the day. The early mornings have been very productive but so have the afternoons. Be aware of the building thunderstorms as lightning can be deadly.
As the water temperatures rise it is important not to mishandle fish. Get them to the net quickly and keep them in the water as much as possible. When taking a picture, have the camera ready to shoot as time out of the water can be critical.
PMD mayflies have been sporadically hatching along with Little Yellow Stones, and a good number of caddis. Anglers that have been fishing the evening rise have been doing well with caddis and yellow stone patterns. Along with these insect hatches baby crawfish have been very active, as a result of this crawdad patterns have produced some fine fish.
The angler that can wade well usually is more productive. Try not to cast over seams, too much line can spook fish. Stay low, try not to wear bright clothing.
The river is in great shape right now so go out and fish NOW. The flows will drop on JULY 29th to 150cfs @ Farad!
Fly patterns;
Peaches & Cream, Hunchback Infrequens , Bird’s Nests , G6’s, EC Caddis, Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs, Stonedaddys, The Brick,
Fishing Report for July 4, 2014
Truckee River
The flows are: Calif. side – 464cfs @Boca Bridge, 499cfs @ Farad ; Nevada side – 295cfs Mogul, 253cfs Reno, 235cfs Vista
Even though there has been extensive traffic on the river lately (party tubers), it has been fishing very well over the last couple of weeks. This morning the skwala stoneflies were crawling on the shoreline rocks, it was a good thing. Along with the stoneflies, baby crawfish have been active moving around and molting . As a result of this, we have released some BIG browns and rainbows over 20 inches in the last ten days on “Stonedaddys”. Along with these food items, caddis, yellow stones, and PMD’s are hatching. “Peaches & Cream”, “G6’s”, and “Tuxedos” have been very effective producing some outstanding fish.
Things are good on the river – Go Fish! Have Fun!
Key tips:
* The angler that can wade strong covering all the nooks and crannies have been the most successful. Be sure to cover all the water in the section you are fishing because some of the biggest fish can be right at your feet!
* Fish in the mornings when the water and the air is cooler.
* Don’t cast over seams, stay low.
* Wear drab colored clothing.
Truckee River Fishing Report June 21, 2014
Truckee River:
The flows are: 290@ Truckee, 591@ Boca Bridge, 650@ Farad, 425@ Mogul, 359@ Reno, 300@ Vista.
As you can see the flows are great for angling right now. The river is in fantastic shape! Go out and enjoy it now because the flows may drop considerably this August due to the water shortage. There has been some very good hatches throughout the entire river system, from Tahoe to Pyramid. Green Drakes have been active from the Nevada border up to Truckee. Yellow Stones are laying eggs from Sparks through the California Canyon. Caddis everywhere! No reason not to get out there, it has been productive. This week we released some BIG fish, one of which was a 27 in male brown that took a #6 Stonedaddy! Pick your favorite spot and get after it! Great times! Because there are a bunch of baby crawdads in the river now, the Stonedaddy has been crushing some BIG fish. Along with a #6 Stonedaddy, Peaches & Cream, G6’s, Bird’s Nests, Prince nymphs, and Copper John’s, have been producing very well. Good Luck out there , have fun!
Truckee River Fishing Report May 27, 2014
The flows on the Truckee Rv. are: 677cfs @Boca and 519cfs @ Mogul
The River has dropped since the last report and is still in great shape. Caddis and mayflies are hatching in good numbers throughout the system. Reading the water properly makes a big difference in the angler’s productivity. Presentation is key, maintain line control! Stay low and dress in drab colors. Last weekend was the start of the rafting season, be careful and fish safe. Remember to practice river etiquette. Go fish and have fun!
Truckee River Fishing Report May 10, 2014
Truckee River:
The flows on the Truckee Rv. are: 732@ Boca, 661@ Mogul.
The River is in outstanding shape, with the good flows comes good hatches. Today at 1:00pm on the California side March Brown mayflies starting coming off. Darker nymphs like the #14 “Carotene” and #14 “Sweet Pea” were very effective. If you are not familiar with these patterns, you should do very well with your favorite March Brown imitation. Yesterday on the Nevada side it was also the March Browns and just like today the fish were on them. Presentation is very important, when you get the right drift that produces, try to repeat the same drift in the same type of water. Fish your drifts thoroughly before moving on, but keep moving to new water. Be careful while wading, use a wading staff if necessary. Go out and fish, have fun and enjoy yourself !
Truckee River Fishing Report May 6, 2014
Truckee River:
The Truckee River is experiencing it’s annual runoff, it is now at 587cfs. The flows have up and off colored in the past three weeks, however the fishing has been good, especially for nice rainbows and browns in the 17 to 22 in range. Now is a good time to fish the edges and lower seams. The beatis (BWO’s) are slowing down but the March Browns have been hatching along with some PMD’s and lots of Caddis. Both the California and Nevada sides have produced well. Last week on the Cali side we stuck some beautiful solid rainbows on #6 Stonedaddys. A couple of days ago on the Nevada side the fish were grabbing the “Carotene” nymph which is a great March Brown mayfly pattern. As the PMD’s start to hatch more frequently the “Peaches & Cream” will start to rock!
The important thing is to get out and fish. Try your favorite “confidence” patterns and catch fish! Good luck!
Truckee River Fishing Report Feb. 19, 2014
Truckee River:
The water flows are around 320 cfs at Reno right now which is great! Both the California and Nevada sides are fishing well. Some outstanding rainbow and browns have been caught this week. Most fish are holding in the smoother slow water some fish are still in the quicker seams. On the Nevada side , the dry fly opportunities have been very good with the baetis hatches improving daily. Look for the overcast days for the best dry fly fishing. A #16 CDC in “natural”(greyish/brown) color has been a good one. Nymphing with baetis is very good but when they are rising it is wise to go dry!
Book a trip now for a great day on the water in California or Nevada!
